“A lot of the elements of the course are done in Yr 12, and this gives me the confidence as I’ve done the basics once. We are given a chance to develop practical skills from GCSE. Learning about nutrition can lead to lots of different careers. This course isn’t like any other A Level course. We like it!” 

KS3 (Year 7-8)

Year 7 - Topics include:

  • The eating well guidelines

There will be an opportunity to cook:

  • fruit salad
  • pasta salad
  • vegetable stir fry 
  • pizza
  • scones
  • breakfast muffins
  • savoury rice
  • oat biscuits
  • fruit crumble
  • Mexican pockets

 

Year 8 - There is an opportunity to take part in the breakfast club and to design and create your own snack. 

There will be an opportunity to cook:

  • muffins
  • flapjack
  • bread
  • crust
  • scones
  • your own unique creation

KS5 (Year 12-13) Food Science and Nutrition Level 3

Entry Requirements: Lefel 2 Catering and Hospitality is ideal but not compulsory.

What is Food Science and Nutrition?

An understanding of food science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that that support healthy eating initiatives.

What will I learn whilst studying Food Science and Nutrition?

Students will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as practical skills for cooking and preparing food.

Course Content:

1 Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups

2 Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat External

3 Experimenting to Solve Food Production

4 Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition

Possible Careers:

Together with relevant Level 3 qualifications such as AS and A Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Sociology and Maths and/or Level 3 qualifications in Hospitality or Science, learners will gain the required knowledge to progress to higher education degree courses, such as:

· BSc Food and Nutrition

· BSc Human Nutrition

· BSc (Hons) Public Health Nutrition

· BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology
