The texts themselves are varied, from the machismo of Stanley in a very hot New Orleans to the restrictive life lived by Jane Eyre in Lowood School. Aims
The general aim of this course is to enable students to explore their literary interests and to encourage them to become enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers.
Course Details
This course is taught simultaneously with the GCSE English course. The course is examined within two tiers: Higher which encapsulates the grades A* to D and Foundation which encapsulates grades C to G.
Students following this course are given the following opportunities:
• To read, understand and respond to a wide range of literary texts, to appreciate the ways in which authors achieve their effects and to develop the skills necessary for literary study.
• To be aware of social, historical and cultural contexts and influences in the study of literature.
• To construct and convey meaning in speech and writing, matching style to audience and purpose.
Assessment will comprise of 2 examinations (75%) and 2 controlled assessments (25%).

You should have gained at least grades B in both English and English Literature GCSE.
What is English Literature?
The WJEC GCE AS and A Level in English literature encourages learners to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies.
What will I learn whilst studying English?
English Literature at A-Level has always been a popular subject. This is undoubtedly due to nature of the course, providing opportunities to study historical, cultural and social issues through literary texts. You will be encouraged to develop as confident, independent and reflective readers of a range of classic and contemporary texts and learn to reflect on your own responses to texts. During the course, we will explore comparisons and connections between texts and deepen your appreciation of the significance of cultural and historical influences upon readers and writers.
Course Content:
Unit 1: Prose fiction pre-1900 e.g. Jane Eyre (Bronte) and Drama e.g. A Streetcar Named Desire (Williams)
Unit 2: Poetry Post – 1900 e.g. Owen Sheers, Seamus Heaney
Unit 3: Poetry pre-1900 and unseen poetry e.g. Keats
Unit 4: Shakespeare e.g. King Lear
Unit 5: Coursework – reading of two prose texts from different periods, one post 2000 e.g. The Great Gatsby, Atonement
Possible Careers:
English Literature certainly complements most subjects and is a highly regarded academic qualification for entry into a variety of university courses and is a great opening to a range of careers such as Law and Journalism.
