“Studying English Literature has really broadened my perspective already. Though challenging, the lessons are full of fun and fascinating discussions about the texts. The texts themselves are varied, from the machismo of Stanley in a very hot New Orleans to the restrictive life lived by Jane Eyre in Lowood School. There is a real sense of community in the English Department, and I love being part of it!”

What is English Literature?

The WJEC GCE AS and A Level in English literature encourages learners to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies.

What will I learn whilst studying English?

English Literature at A-Level has always been a popular subject. This is undoubtedly due to nature of the course, providing opportunities to study historical, cultural and social issues through literary texts. You will be encouraged to develop as confident, independent and reflective readers of a range of classic and contemporary texts and learn to reflect on your own responses to texts. During the course, we will explore comparisons and connections between texts and deepen your appreciation of the significance of cultural and historical influences upon readers and writers.
